Also pictured: NID President Dan Gilbert, left, and Christ Lutheran Church of Orland Park members. | The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Haiti struggles to share the Gospel in the challenging culture of poverty, malnutrition, high unemployment, illiteracy, and voodoo that permeates the country's culture. They turn to their friends and sister churches in the United States for material and spiritual support.
Sue Gross, a nurse and member of Christ Lutheran Church in Orland Park, Illinois, was introduced to Haiti during a medical mission trip and, in 2003, accepted the challenge to develop a support system for Rev. Isaac Jacquet among the people of the Northern Illinois District LCMS. Pastor Isaac, as he is fondly known, bears responsibility for 20 congregations and a dozen Lutheran schools in the district of Jeremie.
Since then, a bus has been purchased, refurbished and delivered to Pastor Isaac, and teams have gone to Haiti to begin the process of building a modest orphanage for the children Pastor Isaac had been sheltering in his home.
Partners in this venture to date in addition to members of Christ Lutheran, Orland Park, have included Luther High School North, Chicago; Fellowship of Faith Lutheran Church, McHenry, Illinois, Living Christ Lutheran Church, Arlington Heights, Illinois; St. Paul Lutheran Church in Decatur, Illinois; Risen Christ Lutheran Church, Rochester, New York; Trinity Lutheran LWML in Tinley Park, Illinois; Lutheran Church Charities in Addison, Illinois; and area businesses.
